Petmate Fresh Flow Pet Fountain

petmate fresh flow pet fountainThe Petmate Fresh Flow Pet Fountain gives your cat or dog fresh filtered water for a happier and healthier pet. Owners say one of the best features is its super quiet motor. With a 50 oz. reservoir (clear so you can tell when it is getting low) in total the Petmate Fresh Flow Pet Fountain holds 108 oz. (13.5 cups) of fresh clean filtered water.

If you do not have a filter on your faucet (like a Brita) then consider getting one for your own health as well as your pets. You could also use bottled water (which is what I use) this keeps mineral deposits from building up on the fountain and helps to keep it clean longer depending on your cat or dogs habits.

Petmate recommends changing the charcoal filter every 30 days depending on the amount of pets using the fountain. I suggest changing the filter the same day every month so it’s easier to remember. If you decide to go longer then 30 days mark the date on your calendar when it’s time to change the filter again. You can purchase replacement Petmate Fresh Flow Filters through Amazon.com

Petmate Fresh Flow Pet Fountain Tips

If your cat or dog is hesitant to try the pet fountain leave it unplugged next to the regular water dish for a few days. You then can plug it in and they should drink from it, if they still are apprehensive then place a little treat on the edge of the drinking fountain to encourage your pet to drink more water or any to begin with!

If your Petmate Fresh Flow Pet Fountain unit is giving you some troubles here the most common problems and the solutions.

pump is not working
its not pumping enough
it’s noisy and is making a gurgling noise

Sometimes dirt, particles of food or even cat hair can slow your pump down, so fountain cleaning generally restores the fountain back to normal. – One note when you plug the fresh flow fountain for the first time may take 2 -3 minutes to remove the air before the water comes out.

What if your cat likes drinking from the sink?
Water from the Petmate fountain circulates and oxygenates the water which is perfect for your cat. However, if you have to drip water from your bathroom faucet your catsĀ  may like the Drinkwell Fountain better because of the streaming water.

The Good
  • Plug in quickly disconnects from AC adapter for cleaning
  • Non skid feet keeps the unit from moving around on floor
  • Quiet motor with a submersible pump

  • Previous owners mentioned leaking use a pan underneath until you are sure it won’t leak

Here's what real customers have to say about the Petmate Fresh Flow Pet Fountain

Helps with my cat's constipation problem, by R.L. King

I've been using Petmate's flow fountains for yrs. My cat didn't drink enough and kept getting constipated. The vet told me to get one. She's always hanging out at the bowl now. Well, now I have a dog and two cats. I have 2 regular bowls and one fountain. None of them drink from the bowls now. They all want the fresh flowing water. It stays so much cleaner. I just pour 2 cups of water in every day and clean it out about once a week. The filter and constant movement keep it so nice. I never see cat hair floating on the top like I do in the reg bowls. I'm buying another one and getting rid of all my bowls. I've had mine 3 yrs and it works perfect still.

Great Product, by W. Hodges

Easy to keep clean and my cats love it. I would recommend purchasing additional filters to keep the water clear and flowing well.

Bit of a high maintenance but worth it in the long run, By Pampeliska

Our male kitty developed struvite crystal several years ago and needed to drink lot more water than he did at the time. Vet suggested we get him fountain, as cats and dogs prefer to drink 'moving' rather than stagnant water. Without much checking around, I got this model at the pet store, it looked most attractive out of all available. It took a little getting used to for me, because it needs to be disassembled and cleaned periodically, but cats took up to it and started liking it immediately. They never gave a second glance to the 'plain' bowl of water sitting nearby and they definitely both drank lot more than they did previously.

The pros outweigh the cons. The reservoir needs to be refilled frequently and it needs to be cleaned thoroughly every couple of weeks at the least. Pump does get noisy and can get damaged if the water level drops too low. The cat hair gets caught on top of the pump and needs to be removed periodically.

After about a year or so, the pump started getting loud even with enough water and finally I discovered there was a little removable plastic cover on one side of the pump, and when I popped this one off, there was a clump of cat hair underneath. Once I removed that and replaced the cover, the noise has stopped. (The instruction never mentioned need for this type of cleaning).
